On the Beach

sun hatI’m enjoying my vacation with friends and our catching up on each others lives and sharing new experiences has been so wonderful and so exhausting. I feel like I’m asleep on my feet or living a dream right now. We have developed an pattern of relaxing on the beach early in the mornings and late in the evenings.  Our conversation topics have ranged from the intensely personal realm to politics. We have exchanged opinions on everything from off shore oil drilling and oil tanker traffic to reciting spoken word poetry.

Last Saturday night I had the experience of reading a poem written by my friend to a small gathering. I knew I did a good job of it because when it ended my audience was so engaged that there was a delicious 2 minutes of silence before the applause.  I can’t post  my friend’s  poetry as it’s yet to be released officially, but I can tell you we both admire Mindy Nettifee’s poetry. Here’s one of her pieces for you to enjoy.

Love Poem to Long Beach

by Mindy Nettifee

“When award-winning Long Beach poet Mindy Nettifee speaks … you’re powerless—you have no choice but to raise your wine glass high over your osmosis head and join her pledge of allegiance to graphic truth.  Her poems have the grace of cursive letters and the guts of a truck driver.”

Hey TT! Enjoy the lovely beach. Doesn’t it just recharge your battery to be there? Every time Les and I head up to our beach house in Maine, it clears my head and balances me. I think we are all drawn to the sea because that is where all life originates . . .

    Take care, my friend–

Relaxing on the beach sounds like heaven right now as it’s raining cats and dogs here in Scotland, lol. It’s great to hear you are having such a good time TT you deserve it my friend.

Actaully today it drizzled here for awhile and we were so thankful. It’s been a terribly dry summer so far, and we are concerned about forest fires and a drop in static water level in our wells. Thanks for your well wishes. I have to monitor myself when it comes to having a good time. I can’t even try to keep up with the activity level of others. If I do my health will crash and I don’t want to go there. :)

How very fitting – summer, beach and poetry. It’s like from a set of a romantic novel. Poem recitals brings me memories of childhood specially during Christmas time. We were encouraged to write poems for each other instead of giving gifts and at Christmas eve, we recited poems in front of friends and family.

Thank you so much for sharing this poem. It was indeed beautiful! :)

I’m so glad you like the poem. I think good spoken word poetry has evocative cadence and rhythm. I suppose we are rather romantic. We sing, drum, dance, write and recite poetry, sketch as well as swimming and paddling too. :)

Twice in my life I’ve had friends who enjoyed reading aloud – usually short stories. I miss that, there is magic in “aloud”, much as I love to curl up with a good book by myself. A week ago I attended a poetry reading in Portuguese – my language skills being still a bit rocky I didn’t understand most of it, but to hear the voices, the cadences, was magical, really enchanting. I often feel so bombarded by harsh sounds and noises, it was nice to be reminded that hearing, listening, can be a sensual pleasure too. Thank you for drawing my attention to this again with your own story and the link.

I love reading aloud and as well as reading poems we also read short stories to each other too. The sound of the words whether rhyming or not are delicious. The cadence and rhythms transport me to another time and place. They are so evocative that I visualize the scenes. I shall never give up reading aloud and listening to others read aloud either. I love it. :)

Attending a reading in a foreign language was something I have only done once and the language was French. I really enjoyed the presentation even though I was not exactly crystal clear on what was being said. Thank you so much for your comment and please accept my apology for not replying to it sooner. I have had 15 visitors in less than a month and I have more arriving this evening. I hope you have a happy and peaceful summer.

How lovely that you are having such a fun time – sweet pictures of the straw hat and flip-flops. I also love sitting on the beach and watching the sea, find it so re-charging. Have a wonderful time dear lady.

Hello there and thanks for the summer vacation well wishes. I’m rather tired to tell the truth. I enjoy the visitors but the activity is frequently too much for me to cope with. By the time Labor Day weekend is over I will need a vacation from vacationers. lol :D
