Happy Earth Day!

goldstream-park-waterToday my husband and I celebrated six major changes we have made in our lives that uphold our ongoing commitment to leave the next generation a  legacy of respect for this planet we live on.

We planted 150 tree plugs (Douglas fir and Cedar) on our own property in the 4 1/2 acres that we have left in it’s natural state for these last 20 years to be enjoyed by wildlife.  This section is fenced and we do not enter it or allow any other people or dogs to enter it unless the fences require mending.
We cleaned up all traces of human trash in the stream, creek and pond on our property and then continued downstream along the creek  for 2 1/2 miles in either direction.
We renewed our commitment to support the whole and healthy food programs for school children and for needy adults and families in our community.
We renewed our commitment to making better food choices by deriving as much of our food as possible from local organic sources.
We celebrated being in the company of  others who think every day ought to be an Earth Day.

I love this Earth Day image and message from 2009.

I haven’t gotten to do anything for Earth Day yet, being at work. I think what you and your husband did is extraordinary and a great example of what people should be doing for Earth Day. Employers should really give everyone who can have the day off a day off so they can save gas and do other environmentally friendly things. So far, my best contribution is a post on the company blog on ways businesses can be more environmentally friendly. Hopefully someone will take a tip to heart and make a difference!

      Hi Kristi,

The best way to get into Earth Day is to start prepping on Spring Solstice as we did. That’s when we got the trees and started planting and as we planted we did the cleanup too. We made an every day commitment just to do some “Earth Work” and with a couple of exceptions we stuck to it. It was so enlivening in many ways because it’s spring and because we were outside and working side by side.

We support others who are into community gardening and gleaning. They provide garden plots and expertise and teach how to grow, prepare and preserve food in the good old fashioned ways that don’t include pesticides, etc. When my health was better I worked at gardening, and when we ran horses we supplied manure to the community garden free of charge. Now we kick in cash.

You know it’s been so many years since I had to work in an office type of environment that your post is bound to be an eyeopener for me. I work at home and do as much as I can online and by email. I’ll be over to read your article this evening after dinner. Happy Earth Day!

You and your husband have inspired me to do something in behalf of Earth Day. I’m going to help a friend plant a vegetable garden and start a compost. Thanks for the inspiration.

      Hello Ileane,
Gardening is therapeutic as growing food is such a natural and enjoyable thing to do, not to mention, benefiting from. I used to be an in the ground gardener but for several years now I have been into container gardening on a large deck. You’d be surprised how much I produced and how beautiful the veggies, herbs and flowers were. I love the scent that wafts through the backdoor into the house, and we virtually live on the deck when we aren’t working, in the good weather months of the year. We also compost and recycle so I’m glad to hear we inspired you.
      Happy Earth Day!

It’s a shame that your 4 and a half acres of natural unspoilt land isn’t enjoyed by you and your loved ones… if it were me who owned something like that I’d practically live out there :)

Happy Earth Day to you too.

Ah … but we do live here – in cabin in the woods where we split wood for heat and hope the power won’t go out because if it does there’s no water from the well.

The part above is only part of the property and we do enjoy it — we just don’t invade it. We can see eagles roost on the very top of the old snags, and the ravens and woodpeckers , herons, ducks, quail, raccoons, songbirds, deer, etc. From time to time m my husband and I do walk there but not during nesting and birthing season. Also the wildlife wouldn’t be there at all or in the same number if we were up close and personal ie. if our friends, family and their dogs were marching through it regularly.

Preserve and protect nature was our Earth Day motto way back 25 years ago and it was more than a motto to us. It became the reason why we bought this land, built our home, and worked our butts off to pay the mortgage out.

      Woo hoo! Happy Earth Day!

This just makes me almost burst with happiness. I love that you leave your land to nature, this is something that I find so important I can barely express it. All land is not an amenity to be enjoyed by people alone, it is so much more than that, it is habitat, and it is its-self entirely. I am very fond of finding the wildness in an urban environment but pockets of pristine land are so rare and precious. I wish I could do the same as you but even protecting our back garden from over zealous weeding is hard sometimes!

My partners parents have a bit of land and how they “manage” it to within an inch of it’s life and then wonder why there are few butterflies and wildflowers drives me nuts. Oh, and only “nice” animals are allowed to live there. Can you hear my blood boiling? You give me faith that some of the people who have land know how to treat it wisely. It’s not officially earth day any more but Happy Earth Day nonetheless, because I think with you that every day is earth day.

    @Bird
Some have a hard time wrapping their minds around the idea that nature does not need any improvement and humans are destructive. Those who have been inculcated with the ridiculous belief systems that claim they have dominion over the earth and animals have callous disregard for ecology and the benefits we humans draw from it. They are only to quick to cut trees down, clear underbrush that houses and feeds may birds and animals out, and haul out their closet chemicals to poison the plants they call weeds and the insects they dislike. Of course their domestic pets who they love are allowed to run amok on each and every corner of the land they own. SIGH … we moved away from places and spaces where that thinking was prevalent 3 decades ago. We sincerely wish that every day was an Earth Day.
