Part of the whole limited by time and space

clouds and grass

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty… The true value of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. … We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. — Albert Einstein, 1954

      Hi Stephen,

      This quote is among my all time favorites because it says it all. I’m planning to post some of my other faves too.

    Sometimes it can be hard dealing with people who consider themselves “disconnected” from the whole, don’t you agree? Think of the harmony humans would feel if they all recognized their part in the collective. Ironically, it takes special days like today, Earth Day, for the majority of the human race to realize that they only encompass 1% of the entire unity. Tomorrow, they’ll go back to being individualists, divided, and seperated from their origins.

      Yes, I do agree. I also believe your observation is correct and most will go back to living a disconnected life. Separation from nature and from each other merely continues the downward descent. However, I also believe there are more people who have become conscious and have taken action to and I’m happy about that.

    Albert Einstein was a profound thinker and deeply spiritual person. I am consistently inspired by his quotes. Thanks for sharing this one.

    P.S. The feed from my site works if I use my WordPress url instead of my domain name url.

      @Sandra Lee
      Hello there. I’m also inspired by his quotes and felt this one was perfect for Earth Day. And I have noticed the “feed” issue however, this plugin is reflecting the latest version and there’s nothing I can do on this end re: the URL. It seems to recognize only the root sub-domain.
      Thanks for commenting. :)

    I loved reading this. It reminded me that in many schools of thought the process of human psychology evolves from the single parent (or caregiver)/child relationship to a never-ending, ever-widening process that leads toward relationship with all beings, and all things outside the self.

    Like the stone dropped into the pond, the circles expand…

      I love the way you expressed that. :)
