Have a Green Halloween

firefighterleopardFor Halloween this year I’m dressing up as a leopard and my husband is dressing up as a firefighter. We cannot recall ever having purchased “new” Halloween outfits.

We were able to borrow and find all the accouterments required for our costumes at garage sales and in charity shops, just as we have been able to find what we need in the same places for over 30 years.

This morning I spotted an excellent article this morning on my feedreader on the subject of green costuming for Halloween that I would like to share with my readers.

When it comes to Halloween costumes, scary images come to mind: over-packaged costumes; plastic accessories; dresses and capes made of unsustainable materials. So is it possible to bewitch your neighbourhood’s trick-or-treaters with an eco-friendly costume this Halloween?

You most certainly can, says Jed Goldberg, president of Toronto-based Earth Day Canada. And it starts with some creative thinking. Read the full post: Green Halloween Costumes

Here’s hoping you will be enjoying a green Halloween. If you would like to share where you got the materials required for your costume then please feel free to post a comment.

I think it’s wonderful that you choose to wear a costume at all. I’m a real party-pooper at Halloween. I usually contrive some way not to be at home, so I can avoid the tumult knocking at my door. I love seeing the kids in their costumes. I just hate having to jump up every two minutes to answer the doorbell.

TT-I hope you’re doing well. I know I speak for a lot of people when I say I miss your presence at BC, both as a commentator and a friend. Please keep in touch and let me know how you are. Feel free to e-mail me.

I live in a community that can be described as an artists’, musicians’ and actors’ colony. When it comes to Halloween people here go all out. I’m usually the same as you describe but this year I’m making a change. I’m getting into the spirit of Halloween by dressing up and helping out at a preschool party. The party for the little ones will be over quite early, so I’ll be home in my sanctuary long before the fireworks starts and all the other stuff that goes on.

P.S. Thanks for the email invitation. I’ll contact you this weekend. Suffice to say that I have not lost contact with any members I truly cared about. We tweet and email and they are members of Blogged too.

My friend & I used to construct our own costumes. One year I made a paper mache pumpkin outfit for her son. Lots of fun, those days…

In the past I was heavily involved in making costumes for Halloween however, I’ve been in a slump regarding the festivities for the last few years and now I’ve bee drafted into helping out the preschoolers my enthusiasm is returning. Some of the parents have come up with some really creative ideas and I’m looking forward to this little party to see what the others have come yp with as well.

I’m making my son’s costume this year (almost done), and although I can’t say that it’s green (I bought lots of shiny fabric, for example), he will be able to wear it again and again, as I am sure he will want to, and it can be passed on. I love being able to sew something durable, even if my sewing skills aren’t quite up to par.

    Enjoy your Halloween!

Hmmmm … I agree that shiny material doesn’t sound very green, but now I’m curious about what the costume will be like. I hope you will have the time to drop in and tell me but in case you don’t then Have a spooky Halloween!

I wish you, your husband, and the ones you love a very happy Halloween. The idea of ‘Leopard’ vs. ‘Firefight’ seems interesting; complementary somehow (fire and anti-fire) as I see :)

Thanks so much for the well wishes. Coming up with a firefighter’s costume was easy. We live in a small community and have a volunteer fire department so many of of friends are volunteer fire fighters that it wasn’t hard to come up with worn out accouterments. As for me I didn’t have a clue what I would be for Halloween until I picked up and leopard spotted tunic in a secondhand shop and my friend picked up a leopard hat (helmet style) for a child. The helmet was too snug but whoever made it for their child had left generous seam allowances so I could easily let out the seams and make it fit and the tunic was my size. So I was well on my way to becoming a leopard in no time flat.

I will be conventional this year. Normally I would try to do something different but this year I will be a wicked witch, with warts and all!!! :) Happy Hallow’s Eve!

Love your green Halloween post and costume ideas. It’s wonderful to reuse and recycle items and costumes for Halloween rather than buying new things. It’s also very frugal. Enjoy and Happy Halloween!

Hello TT! Thanks for pointing this post out! have to say it is easy to forget to go green on holidays and splurge on anything you want and using chemicals and so on. It’s good to know that there are many easy ways to have fun and think of the environment as well! A leopard sounds really cool! Will you have pictures ^_^!

Halloween isn’t a big holiday in Holland just yet. and everything that is organized is for the little ones. Unless you organize it with your friends. Unfortunately, my friends aren’t around, so no Halloween party. I will go trick & treating with my little cousin tho ^_^ and I have a cape….soo I will dress up as a…let me see…oh I know! A sophisticated Elf lady. Yes something like that haha.

Either way: Have all the fun! And I wish you a Happy Scary Halloween! Take care! Ciao!
