Earth Day
Earth Day is on April 22, 2009 and according to the Earth Day Network’s web site, it took us (collectively as a human race) about 125 years to use our first trillion barrels of oil. We’re going to use up the next trillion barrels in only 30 years. It stands to reason our increased oil usage has an impact on our environment, our health and our lives.
So this year as we celebrate let’s remember there are simple yet effective steps we can take to help preserve our world. Here are 6 things you can do right now to honor Earth Day this year.
This two-year initiative will culminate with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend the Green Generation’s core principles: Family with windmills: Renewable energy for future generations.
Join up with bloggers around the world through Bloggers Unite for Earth Day on April 22nd and honor the planet every day of the year.

This simple step can reduce your carbon footprint by 450 pounds per year. And all you need to do is by energy efficient light bulbs and use them! There’s more information here at the official Energy Star web site.
Trees are Mother Nature’s all-in-one air conditioner and heater. It’s estimated that three properly-planted trees can reduce energy bills by as much as 30% – that’s both heating and cooling. Help out by planting a tree this year on Earth Day.
You can plant one in your yard or donate one to someone. If neither of those options work for you then consider donating a tree to one of our national parks. Find more at the Arbor Day Foundation’s web site.
There are lots of events being held on Earth Day so find one and join in. Whether you’re a student on campus, live in the suburbs or are an urban dweller you’ll find various events going on in your area. Pitch in, lend a hand and promote saving our Earth. Go to Earth Day’s web site to find what’s happening in your town.
By some estimates our US-grown produce travels up to 1500 miles before it reaches our neighborhood supermarket. When you calculate one gallon of gas creates 20 pounds of carbon dioxide you can see how much damage produce can do – and that’s for US-grown food.
Buying organic saves the Earth because you aren’t adding harmful chemicals into our eco-system (not to mention they aren’t going into your body). Check out Local Harvest’s web site for more information.
According to the Earth Day web site, by the year 2030 the world will consume 47% more oil than it did in 2003. And almost all of us contribute to that statistic – especially if we drive a car. So choosing to ride the electric bicycle Optibike versus driving a car means you aren’t using oil to run the bike and you aren’t polluting the air when you do.
In fact your carbon footprint from riding an Optibike is very small – Optibike gets the equivalent of 2,000 miles per gallon. No hybrid can offer you that kind of gas mileage! Find out more about optibikes.
Just wanted to say HI. I found your blog a few days ago on Technorati and have been reading it over the past few days.
@Josh

dear tt,
Cant say i am not flattered by your sweet compliment. but i am not talented. :)i am very ordinary.
I will be very proud to have you as my friend.
thanks for liking the poems. i actually dared to write poems because a couple of friends praised a few of my poems too much, yet after reading thousands of books by the real craftsmen i know my place, but i keep writing bec i love to play with words and paint pictures out of them.
with warmest wishes,
trisha

Thanks so much for your compliments. I love your poetry. :)
I wish I had it in me to participate, but unfortunately I came to terms with the fact that economy will trump environment every time. Sure, there may be small victories along the way, but ultimately I believe we’re going to lose the war. All for the sake of puny, human ego. <:(

Sometimes I feel the same way as you do. Then I rally. The economy can only trump the environment if we continue to elect politicians who are in bed with big business and I’m hoping that we will smarten up real soon.
I don’t know whether there’s a connection or not, but the only post over the past two years that attracted absolutely no response was the one I did last year for Earth Day. Hope your mileage varies. :-)
@Ian
Sheesh … I hope so too.
Oh my Earth Day is coming up fast.
I already have a number of environmental nlogs on my site and I follow a couple that are trluly sensational that I wish everyone could read. Can you tell me how I can join in with the Bloggers Unite earth Day?
Thanks
Angela

TimeThief,
What an excellent post. You are so passionate about this issue and bringing it to the fore as you have serves us and our Earth well.
We are in the midst of re-landscaping our property, so I asked my husband to buy me a tree for my birthday. We went out yesterday and bought two! They will be delivered next week and they will be the best presents ever. He is placing them so I can see them from our kitchen window. What a view that will be!

I love planting trees. Isn’t it great to know that the trees you planted will not only be wonderful to look upon, but will also function as the planet’s lungs, and will be a home for birds and other creatures too.
Please join the Bloggers Unite for Earth Day campaign and write a post on preserving and protecting out planet tomorrow.
hey TT,

Thanks so much for joining us. I have read your excellent post and left you a comment.
I have joint Blogger Unite. it’s nice,
I can find something new on environmental issues, earth day events and others.
What I’m thinking of Earth Day is about historical issues of the celebration. You know that people prefer to join an events with high emotional and cultural bounding with them and their community.
Asian may find their environmental day by their self with their own way. Or they will celebrate earth day with their modified activity that suit to their culture.
thanks tt

I’m glad to hear you are on board. May your Earth Day be a memorable one.
TT,
Thank you for your reminder(s). And thank you again for letting us know about doing the ‘little things’ that count. Sometimes we think that there has to be some huge initiative in place; in order to make an impact. Each of us has a responsibilty to do OUR share, and not wait for someone else to do it for us. 365 days a year, 24/7 awareness, by each one of us, should just about cover it.

@Nards
You’re welcome. There’s so much to do these days that we can find ourselves in a treadmill mentality and find to our chagrin that we have missed important dates like this one. But far more than being just a one day event I know you will agree that we need to become a world wide movement of people who value and honor the Earth every day of the year.
For every community, the overarching concerns will be the same (preservation of the environment, reduction in consumption, ending pollution etc) but the local issues will be different.
Spouse and I drove around the countryside during the university holidays and saw nothing but crippling drought and horrendous bushfire remains. Melbourne drinking water dams are down to 28% of their capacity. Individuals are being asked to reduce their total water consumption to 150 ls a day.
I am so glad you are celebrating Earth Day today (22/4/2009). Perhaps a special day like this may not make a large impact on adults, but at least the children might celebrate the day in their classrooms.
@Hels
The children in my community both those in the schools and those who are home schooled have a whole day of events planned to celebrate Earth Day. Without doubt they are members of an environmentally aware generation with and altruistic mindset. They are enthusiastic program organizers and participants and we adults actually have a hard time coordinating all the events and mustering enough energy to make it to the end of the day. :)

I agree wholeheartedly. :)
Wow, it’s good to see an Earth day post that is clear, simple and has good suggestions. I just this minute finished mine, I wrote it on impulse, off the top of my head and was surprised at the boiling rage that flowed out of me at the state of the earth. I had to go through and cut a LOT of what I wrote for fear of freaking out my readers!
It’s easy to get disheartened or scared but truly I don’t believe we can afford to turn our backs on this one. If enough people wake up and change their habits, there is a chance that there will be a place for future generations to live out their lives on planet earth. Hey, that’s better than what I wrote in MY blog! :)
