Brain size and Alzheimer’s

My mother is residing on a nursing home as her dementia means that she can no longer take care of herself. Her older brother was likewise incapacitated and diagnosed with Alzheimer’s previous to his death. Consequently, I have become interested in research pertaining to dementia and to Alzheimer’s.

brainimage.JPGFor many years researchers have witnessed autopsy results noting that some people die with sharp minds and perfect memories, despite the fact that their brains riddled with the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer’s disease. Recent research shows that those people have a larger part of the brain called the hippocampus and this may mean that having a larger hippocampus may protect them from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease-related brain changes. The research study was supported by grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Institute on Aging was presented at the American Academy of Neurology 60th Annual Meeting in Chicago, April 12 — April 19, 2008.
